A musical jaunt full of humor, heart, and self-discovery that reminds us of the importance of life's simple moments and the power of human connection.
Four friends embark on a - figuratively - cosmic adventure to their past and back again, sharing stories along the way about hiding/identity, laughing, living, dying...and middle school, in an attempt to step directly into that elusive "present moment". From the creative minds behind "[title of show]", Now. Here. This. is more than just a musical - it's a celebration of life, love, connection, and the boundless potential of the human spirit.

The Boston Theatre Marathon XXVI Sunday, May 5th @ 12pm!
May 5, 2024
Liliane Klein performs in "The Kiss" by Anne Undeland. Sponsored by Speakeasy Stage Company and directed by Huan Bui.
With: Barbara Douglass, Jason Myatt, and Liliane Klein
Boston Playwrights’ Theatre produces the annual Boston Theater Marathon (BTM), an award-winning, all-day marathon of new 10-minute plays. The plays are chosen from approximately 400 entries from New England playwrights, and the 50 selected plays are produced by 50 New England theatre companies which donate their time and talent to this event.
Inspired by the iconic Boston Marathon, the BTM is a theater endurance event designed to make connections between local playwrights and local theatres—seeding new collaborations and strengthening existing ones, and encouraging more companies to consider producing new plays by local writers!—and to introduce audiences to the breadth and depth of the Boston playwriting and theatre scene. The yearly event provides a showcase—and a connecting point—for the entire theatre community.
Generously supported over the years by the Boston University Center for the Humanities and by individual donations, the BTM gifts its net proceeds to the Theatre Community Benevolent Fund, an organization that helps area theatre artists and companies in crisis.
In 2000, the BTM received a special Elliot Norton Award from the Boston Theatre Critics Association for “Enlivening Local Theatre.” The beloved annual event celebrated its silver anniversary in 2023.

When an announcement in the local paper states that a murder is to be committed at Miss Letitia Blacklock’s home, Little Paddocks, that same evening at 6:30 pm, the household is sent into a frenzy. Soon neighbors come calling to see what the fuss is all about and the entire village is pulled into the danger that awaits. Who is to be murdered? And by whom? Is everyone in the village exactly who they say they are? Might some of them have ulterior motives? Luckily, Agatha Christie’s plucky busybody of a detective, Miss Jane Marple is on hand to provide the solution -- but perhaps not without great risk to herself!
Featuring Jennifer Porter, Dawn Tucker, Dana Packard, Karen Ball, Elisabeth Hardcastle, Gerald Davis, Amanda Painter, Josh Brassard, Thomas C. Vail, Liliane Klein and Hal Cohen, “A Murder Is Announced” will keep you guessing until the very end!

FEUD: Capote vs The Swans Premieres on FX on Wednesday January 31st 2024
January 31, 2024
Liliane Klein appears in episode 4 - just in time for Valentine's Day!
“Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans”, based on the novel “Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer, is directed by Gus Van Sant, Max Winkler and Jennifer Lynch, in the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s award-winning TV series, streaming January 31, 2024 on FX and February 1, 2024 on Hulu. ‘Truman Capote’ (Tom Hollander), the writer of ‘In Cold Blood’, surrounded himself with a coterie of New York society’s most elite women – rich, glamorous socialites who defined a bygone era of high society, nicknamed ‘the swans’. Beautiful and distinguished, the group included grande dame ‘Barbara Paley, (Naomi Watts), ‘Slim Keith’ (Diane Lane), ‘C.Z. Guest’ (Chloë Sevigny) and ‘Lee Radziwill’ (Calista Flockhart). Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets."

The Thing With Feathers - Dark Passage Films
October, 2022
In Gilded-Age New York, a rebellious woman plans to divorce her emotionally unstable husband. Consequently, a civilized evening spirals violently into pandemonium. Liliane Klein plays Bertha, the maid in the upcoming Dark Passage Films feature. With Katie Vincent, Catherine Curtin, Susan Gallagher, Jared Canfield, and Bailey Macejak, and Tony Crane, Jacob Ware, Taso Mikroulis, Fred Sullivan, Anthony Ritosa, and Usher Morgan.
"Dead dreams and broken promises drive a wedge between a married couple fallen out of love. Katherine Greene has made the biggest of big decisions: divorce. Not an easy feat for a Lady of the House a la 1886. Unfortunately, her husband Peter has planned a most important dinner party at the very same time. Stakes are high, motives are ripe, and bad news taints already murky waters. After learning of Katherine’s plans, Peter decides to flip the script, abruptly dismissing himself from an otherwise disaster of an evening. In Peter’s absence, Katherine carpes her last diem by screwing Peter’s brother, of course! This sets an already “Peeping Pete” on a path of absolute destruction. Peter breaks into his own home, hog-tying his wife and brother, leaving them in the non-consensual position of “what’s next?”. Calamity ensues. A House of Horrors meets a Comedy of Manners, where distrust spreads like wildfire, and a union that once had a future now lies dead in cold blood."

Phlebotomist
by Ella Road
How do you evaluate someone’s worth? Wealth? The color of their skin? Education? Class? Goodness? Beauty? In the near future people are evaluated by their blood test “Rating”, which screens for genetic markers – dictating everything from bank loans to dating prospects. In Ella Road’s The Phlebotomist, Bea, a phlebotomist, her partner, Aaron, and best friend Char find the slope from an ounce of prevention to sanctioned ostracism and sterilization dangerously slippery.

BLACK LIVES MATTER
May 26th, 2020
Yesterday, today, and tomorrow: Black. Lives. Matter.
While it is very likely that the present Global Anti-Racist Movement is compounded by the circumstances of the COVID pandemic, it does not make this moment any less urgent. The time is OVERDUE to take a stand. The time is NOW to lead the way to change by setting up a course of accountability. Accountability begins with a statement of where you stand in the fight against racism. It begins with saying "Racism is wrong. No matter what your political, religious, or sociological views are. Whether intentionally or unintentionally complicit in the systemic racism that exists within our communities we irrevocably acknowledge it now and will fight with all our strength to eradicate Racism even as we stumble through creating a brave new anti-racist world."
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” Maya Angelou
All Lives don't matter until Black Lives do. It is our responsibility to lift each other up and amplify each other's voices especially now - rather than staying silent. Because silence speaks VOLUMES.
I would like to share this snippet of an earlier conversation which might be useful to share in case a stranger or loved one is feeling White Guilt or White Fragility about their White Privilege... Please feel free to share:
As a fellow privileged white mom of 3 who grew up on Long Island just outside Queens and now lives just outside Boston, I too have always had friends of every race, religion, gender, age, money bracket, and ability. But I have been hearing a completely new narrative from the one I grew up with. When I was growing up, the goal was to be "colorblind". Now I am hearing loud and clear that we must not only SEE color, but we must acknowledge both that we are different AND we are the same. Because when we are colorblind we ERASE Blackness and default back to the White narrative. I also used to think it was better not to engage if people had opinions different than my own with regard to social justice - especially strangers. Just agree to disagree and worry about my own dang self. Now I am hearing loud and clear that that is not enough! We must actively call out and fight against racism* at every opportunity (*NOT White Privilege - which noone is asking you to give up or fight against since it is actually a very useful superpower to have in the fight to end racism.)
When raising my children, it brought tears to my eyes when my 2.5 year old son was looking at the cover of Highlights Magazine which was a picture of four children playing together, one Black, one Hispanic, one Asian, and one White. When my son looked at the picture, he described them as Yellow, Orange, Blue, and Green - THE COLOR SHIRTS THEY WERE WEARING!!! He did not see race at ALL and it was just breathtaking and beautiful and Utopian. But THAT very moment was actually the same moment that he first experienced his White Privilege and here's why: Black babies have to have their skin color explained to them from the moment they are born. No matter where they live and how many supportive and amazing White and BIPOC friends they have, they need to know - in order to survive - that some people may treat them differently because of their skin color. And ONLY because of their skin color it is more dangerous for them to play with toy guns and wear hooded sweatshirts and walk into a store and go out at night and get pulled over by a cop and put their hands in their pockets, etc.
Racial awareness is in the fabric of the experience of growing up Black in America because when you are Black in America it is a given that there are also White people living in your community, but when you are White in America it is not a given that there are also Black people living in your community.
It makes me very happy to know that your friends have not felt some of the same injustices and microaggressions toward them that so many of my friends have. And I agree with you and your friends that there is clearly not a huge divide... Rather, there has been an overwhelming outpouring of support for (and with) the Black community specifically in the wake of George Floyd's murder which was apparently our breaking point. The protests happening right now around the world make this moment officially the largest civil rights movement in all of history. But in order to end racism we must dismantle and reform the system that created it in the first place. And that's where White Privilege can be our most powerful weapon! I will post a few links in a minute that I have found really helpful.
"White supremacy won't die until White people see it as a White issue they need to solve rather than a Black issue they need to empathize with." - Dwayne Reed

Some useful links (feel free to share):
I have been incredibly moved and inspired by so much of the anti-racist leadership I have seen especially in my local theatre community. In particular, Michael J. Bobbitt and New Repertory Theatre have been creating the foundation and setting the anti-racist standard for the future of theatre and beyond both locally and abroad. I am so proud to be a founding member of the IDEAA committee:
“Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, Anti-Racism, etc. is an ACT OF LOVE – showing love to people who have never been loved by this country. This work is to end a race war, not start one. New Rep aspires to be a predominantly multicultural theatre company because we know that our differences are our greatest strengths. What we all bring to the conversations make the experiences richer and more visceral. These are not just principles or beliefs; they are the fuel that drives everything we do. At New Rep, your uniqueness is revered. Bring all of who you are to the table and come and “play” with us.” - Michael J Bobbitt.
Additionally, I have personally pledged a minimum monthly contribution to every professional theatre company in the greater Boston area who practices actionable accountability toward adopting anti-racist theatre practices.

American’s ideas about our nation’s direction broaden the Cyclist’s personal perspective, while the meditations of his seven-year-old self confirm his birthright advantages. Liliane Klein set for Lead in developmental workshop/reading of The Confession, The Musical
August 2016
Liliane Klein will play the role of Rebecca Lapp in the developmental workshop/reading of The Confession, The Musical.
The Confession, a Musical is a story based on Beverly Lewis's The Confession which has sold over 26 million copies worldwide and was Hallmark's top grossing TV movie of 2015. The principal author is Emmy award nominee Martha Bolton. She was Bob Hope's lead writer for seventeen years.
The play tells the story of an Amish girl who discovers on the eve of her wedding that she is adopted, and sets out on a quest to find her birth mother. Challenges abound for each member of the cast, as the story takes us through both of her worlds, the “English” and the Amish, from thrilling barn-raisings to refined upper crust living (complete with British servants), including the pain and grief of those left behind. It’s about rejection, rebellion, forgiveness, discovery, and the struggles of familial bonds. The show boasts a range of musical styles, from soaring ballads and magnificent harmonies to foot-stomping bluegrass and hip-hop.
We are in the early stages of development of this extensive work, though the initial work has been performed regionally for several years with great success. The book and score have since been substantially rewritten, including the addition of numerous new songs.
Blue Gate Musicals is producing the musical, with the intention to move it forward to a full production, and then expand to bigger venues. Dan Posthuma, based in Nashville, is Producer.
The project will be directed by Myriam Cyr (www.myriamcyr.com) who has just recently directed a run of the play Simon Says at the Culture Project in New York City that received rave reviews for her work. Myriam Cyr’s career spans journalism, writing, theater, and film. She starred opposite Al Pacino in the title role of his theatrical production of Salome, performed the lead role in Julie Taymor’s original production of The Green Bird at the New Victory Theater, worked as Assistant Director to Nobel Literature Prizewinner Dario Fo, and was part of Steven Berkoff’s acclaimed theater company at the Royal National Theater in London. Myriam portrayed Ultra Violet in I Shot Andy Warhol. Her lead role in the French Canadian film, Le Secret de Jerome, won her numerous awards including the Baillard d’Or at the Namur Film Festival.
Fluent in both English and French, Myriam briefly studied music composition at McGill before graduating with honors in theater from the Montreal Conservatory of Dramatic Arts and with her Masters at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.
Boston audiences will recognize Myriam’s extraordinarily creative work in directing staged readings of the World Wide Premiere of Jack Beatty’s new play, The Battle Not Yet Begun: Munich 1938 and the U.S. Premiere of Shaw Festival winner,The Divine: A Play for Sarah Bernhardt. She also directed the magical, creative and innovative Mary Poppins, Little Women, and The Sound of Music at Stage284. A Founding Member ofStage284 and BlackBoxLab at Stage284, Myriam currently serves as Artistic Director for the latter. Ongoing producing projects include Hedda Gabler screenplay by Christopher Hampton, Emile Zola, and Au Bonheur des Dames.

Boston Landmarks Orchestra closes their 2016 Free Wednesday Concerts at the DCR Memorial Hatch Shell on August 31 (7 pm)* with another extraordinary collaboration with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC). A concert performance - with music and dance - of The Boys from Syracuse, with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Lorenz Hart, and a new adaptation of the George Abbott book by Larry ( and Jennifer Hart with consultation by 3-time Tony Award librettist (Annie, co-librettist of The Producers and Hairspray) Tom Meehan. If it is also raining September 1st, the concert will be moved to Symphony Hall on the 1st. For more information visit landmarksorchestra.org.
Read more about how this historic production came to be here: http://www.classical-scene.com/2016/08/25/restoring-classic-broadway-score/
Based on William Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, The Boys from Syracuse is often considered the finest of all Rodgers and Hart creations. This 'concert performance' marks only the second professional performance of the inimitable 1938 Big-Band style original orchestrations by Hans Spialek. Familiar songs include 'Falling in Love with Love,' 'Sing for Your Supper,' and 'This Can't Be Love.'
Filled with two sets of twins, and women chased and chaste, The Boys from Syracuse was the first musical ever adapted from Shakespeare. Identical twins Antipholus of Syracuse and Antipholus of Ephesus were separated as children in a shipwreck. Both have manservants, also twins, both named Dromio. When the Syracuse set arrive in Ephesus, mishaps and mischief ensue as they are mistaken for their brothers by merchants, wives, and mistresses. Perplexed partners, disgruntled courtesans, and outraged constables are left in the duo's wake before this show's tangled web is unraveled.
Landmarks and CSC have assembled an amazing cast to bring this ancient Grecian adventure to the Esplanade. They include Remo Airaldi* (Dromio of Syracuse), Jenna Augen* (Luciana),Justin Blanchard* (Antipholus of Syracuse), Larry Coen* (Dromio of Ephesus), Jennifer Ellis* (Adrianna), Liliane Klein* (Luce), Andy McLeavey* (Antipholus of Ephesus), DCR Commissioner Leo Roy (Sergeant) and Marc W. Soucy (Aegean). The ensemble includes Leah Carnow, Serge Clivio, Steven Del Col, Brittany Martel, Kate Penner, Brad Foster Reinking and Suzi Weisberg.
*Member of Actors' Equity Association
The creative team includes Music Director/Conductor Christopher Wilkins, co-directors Steven Maler and Adam Sanders, choreographer Yo-el Cassell and costume designer Brooke Stanton.
The Boys From Syracuse opened on November 23, 1938, at the Alvin Theater in New York with direction by George Abbott and choreography by George Balanchine, closing after a 235 performance run. A film version was released by Universal Pictures in 1940, which starred Allan Jones, Joe Penner, Martha Raye, and Irene Harvey. The production then made its way to London's West End in 1963 and was later given a revival in 1991, directed by Judi Dench. It was revived again by The Roundabout in New York in 2002, directed by Scott Ellis and choreographed by Rob Ashford, with a new book by Nicky Silver. The production was presented as a concert revival in Washington, D.C. in 2011.
Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is dedicated to bringing the works of William Shakespeare in vital and contemporary productions to the people of Boston and to exploring Shakespeare's plays with the Boston community in innovative and creative ways. Best known for its annual free performances on Boston Common, CSC also presents several free play-reading events during the year-Theatre in the Rough, Shakespeare & Law, and Shakespeare & Leadership. The Company fulfills its educational mission with training programs for both pre-professional actors through its Apprentice Program and early-career actors through CSC2. Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is the Theatre in Residence at Babson College. For more information visit commshakes.org.
The Boston Landmarks Orchestra was founded in 2001 by conductor and community advocate Charles Ansbacher. The orchestra is comprised of many of the area's finest professional musicians. In its earliest years, the orchestra performed in such historically important settings as Fenway Park, the USS CONSTITUTION pier, Jamaica Pond, Franklin Park, Copley Square, Boston Common, and other landmark locations. Since 2007, its principal home has been at the DCR's Hatch Memorial Shell. For more history visithttp://www.landmarksorchestra.org/About.html.

Liliane Klein will take part in the 18th annual Boston Theater Marathon in Samantha Noble's, A Drink, directed by Liz Carlson and presented by the Nora Theatre Company on May 8th, 2016.
The Boston Theater Marathon features productions of fifty plays by fifty New England writers, produced by fifty different theatre companies. There’s no better way to see a cross section of the immense pool of talent that makes up the New England theatre community than attending the Boston Theater Marathon. As always, net proceeds from ticket sales to the BTM benefit the Theatre Community Benevolent Fund, which provides financial support to theatres and theatre artists in times of need.
What is the Theatre Community Benevolent Fund?
TCBF provides financial relief in a confidential, respectful manner to individual and non-profit organizational members of StageSource facing extreme illness, catastrophic acts of nature, and other events such vandalism/theft, and who have limited or no resources with which to handle such occurrences. The fund recognizes the essential value of artists and arts organizations to society, and treats all applicants with dignity, discretion, and compassion.
History
In the Fall of 1997, a Boston-area artist became ill with a life-threatening condition. The theater community decided to throw a party in order to raise funds to help with medical expenses. The Big Easy nightclub opened its doors free of charge for this event, and actors, producers, writers, designers, directors, and managers all donated their time, money, and expertise. The party was an unqualified success. Out of that experience arose the idea to create an organization to aid members of the Boston area theater community who are in dire need and do not have the financial resources to meet those needs. That organization is the Theatre Community Benevolent Fund. The first directors and officers of TCBF were Polly Hogan and Ron Ritchell, founders of the Lyric Stage and Lyric West Theatre, and Mary C. Huntington, founding artistic director of The Nora Theatre Company. The first substantial contributor was the Boston Theatre Marathon, established by Kate Snodgrass, Artistic Director of Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, for the dual purpose of promoting the area’s wealth of playwrights and of contributing to the Fund. In order for the Fund to grow and be more effective, the directors approached StageSource to assist with management of the Fund. Through this partnership, both organizations benefit by being better service providers, and the theater community has a strong resource to turn to in times of trouble.

Voices of BTM XVIII: Samantha Noble
May 1st, 2016 in Alums, Blog, Boston Theater Marathon XVIII, new plays, short plays
Tell us a little bit about your play.
It’s a story about a mother and a daughter, and the first drink they’ve shared together in a long time. It’s also about memory, what happens when what we rely on most begins to fail us, and who we want to be to our parents and to ourselves. And it’s a little bit about quantum mechanics.
What made you want to tell this story?
A combination of personal experiences kept bringing me back to the subject matter of the play, foremost among them a close relationship to some really extraordinary women. For a long time I wasn’t sure what the right words were to articulate the idea I kept coming back to. When the words finally happened, this play is what they became. I hope they’re the right ones.
What’s next for you as a playwright?
My thesis play for my MFA at BU, Franklin, (centered on Captain Sir John Franklin’s doomed expedition to find the Northwest Passage) is going to be part of the Kennedy Center’s MFA Playwright’s Workshop this July, and then a part of BPT’s upcoming season next spring.
Don’t miss A Drink—and 49 other amazing ten-minute plays—in Boston Theater Marathon XVIII on May 8!

Singers from the NextDoor Theater stage will perform a wide variety of songs, including memorable numbers from previous seasons’ shows, as well as a sneak peek of their upcoming May production of “A Little Night Music.” This one night-only benefit concert will raise money for an important backstage renovation at the theater and is the signature event of the monthlong March of the Arts community celebration.
Spring Sing features a cast of faces familiar to past audience members. From NDT’s most recent production, “The Light in the Piazza,” guests might recognize Adam Schuler (director), Karen Fanale (Signora Naccarelli) and Katie O’Reilly (Franca). Other notable performers from previous shows include husband and wife duo Kevin and Shonna Cirone, who played opposite each other as Joe Gillis and Betty Schaefer in “Sunset Boulevard,” as well as Warner Huntington and Vivienne Kensington in “Legally Blonde,” alongside fellow Spring Sing performer Liliane Klein, who played Paulette. Guests may also recognize “Next to Normal” rock stars Becky Ruccio (Diana), Sarajane Mullins (Natalie) and Sean Crosley (Henry). Allison Russell (Dainty June in “Gypsy”) will also join the cast, along with Katie Ann Clark (Woman in “Marry Me a Little”) and Marianna Wood (Jeannie in “The Great American Trailer Park Musical”).
Rounding out the list are the leads of NDT’s upcoming show, “A Little Night Music.” Amelia Broome, who will play Desiree (last seen as M’Lynn in “Steel Magnolias”), Sarah deLima, who will play Madame Armfeldt (previously seen as Lotte in “Lettice and Lovage” and Ida in “The Cemetery Club,” for which she received an IRNE Award), and newcomer Todd Yard, in the role of Frederik. Accompanying them is Dan Rodriguez, the music director who has worked with the NextDoor Theater for the past few seasons.
All of these musicians will come together to raise money for phase three of the NextDoor Theater’s renovation plan. This phase will focus on fully transforming the backstage actors’ area to include a new handicapped-accessible bathroom.
Tickets cost $35 each for general admission and include both the concert and a reception immediately following with the performers and artistic director of NDT, Brian Milauskas. Tickets can be purchased at nextdoortheater.org or by calling the box office at 781-729-6398 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays.
Patrons who are unable to attend the concert are invited to consider making a donation either online or over the phone as well. The NDT website has additional opportunities and events through March of the Arts.

This show, by the award-winning team of Roger Ames and Elizabeth Bassine, is scheduled to begin a developmental cycle this August in Portland. No Parking tells the story of a quirky group of nursing home seniors afflicted by memory loss and dementia. a pint of understanding
the professor, the policeman & the president
Music by Joel LaRue Smith and Joseph Smith
Book & Lyrics by Lee Phenner
Directed by Benny Sato Ambush
Music Direction by Scott Nicholas
Arriving home after a long trip, Professor Chester Washington III, a renowned African American scholar, finds the door to his house jammed and his life’s work about to be put to the ultimate test. When Tim O’Connor, a white police sergeant, arrests him while investigating an alleged burglary at his home, two very different stories emerge. The U.S. president stages a meeting at the White House that launches the professor and the policeman on a profound, often sardonic journey that forces them to confront what they stand for and explore the possibility of meaningful change in a nation that's often divided.
Inspired by the much publicized July 2009 arrest of Harvard University professor Henry Louis "Skip" Gates, Jr. at his Cambridge, Massachusetts home by a white police officer, an event that led to the much-hyped White House Beer Summit, A Pint of Understanding is a fictionalized work of musical theatre that dives beneath the surface to get at the thorny issues at the heart of that incident. Employing drama, sardonic humor, multimedia, and a multi-genre musical score rooted in jazz, A Pint of Understanding goes beyond that episode to explore broader issues of race, class, irony, ego, individual perspectives and collective blindspots … with a sense of hope. Given today’s headlines, A Pint of Understanding is all too relevant. It's a revolt against complacency and a creative, positive contribution to the progress our country can make — if we all insist on it.
